NAOJ Future Planning Symposium 2023:
Science Roadmap of NAOJ

日本語サイトはこちら

Objectives

Based on discussions in the Science Advisory Committee, the National Astronomical Observatory (NAOJ) held the 'NAOJ Future Planning Symposium 2021: Thinking about Future Plans Across Wavelengths' in November 2021 to discuss science in the various fields of astronomy, and the 'NAOJ Future Planning Symposium 2022: How to decide and promote future plans' in December 2022 to discuss the framework how future plans at NAOJ should be planned. As a result, it was broadly agreed that NAOJ’s future plan should be developed in the following three steps:

(a) Science Roadmap that should be promoted in the future by Japanese astronomy as a whole
(= Science Roadmap of Japanese Astronomy),
(b) Science Roadmap that should be promoted in the future by NAOJ
(= NAOJ Science Roadmap), and
(c) Implementation Plan for projects to implement Science Roadmap for NAOJ
(= NAOJ Project Implementation Plan).

Since (a) was discussed at the 2021 symposium, we would like to try out the process (b) at this year's Future Symposium. This will enable us to identify issues to be addressed in the actual formulation of the "NAOJ Science Roadmap"for the next fiscal year and beyond, and to add reality to the formulation process.

We would like to take this opportunity to hear the opinions of the entire astronomical community, as this is an important discussion forum not only for NAOJ, but also for the future of astronomy in Japan. In particular, we would like to invite those who are considering future plans as "the science that NAOJ should promote in the future" to participate in this trial.
