Careers
Various staff members are employed at NAOJ. Depending on the content of the jobs, they are broadly classified in one of the following general categories.
Research and Academic Staff
Research and Academic Staff widely engages in research activity on astronomy. NAOJ’s Research and Academic Staff not only pursues individual research but is also involved in a wide range of tasks, such as management of the projects; developing and operating the large telescopes and astronomical observation instruments; or using its specialized knowledge for public relations. As the host institute of the Department of Astronomical Science, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI), NAOJ provides research guidance and education to not only students in that department, but also to students studying astronomy at other universities as well.
There are both fixed-term and permanent positions. In many cases, Research and Academic Staff are recruited through public advertisement of the posts, which require a degree related to astronomy.
There is also a staff recruitment system called the NAOJ Fellowship targeting highly qualified independent young researchers.
