“Census” of Galaxies Embedded in Dust

Mysterious submillimeter signals from the Universe. ALMA revealed that nearly 80% of them come from dust rich galaxies.

A team from Kyoto University and NAOJ observed an area called the Subaru/XMN-Newton Deep Field using ALMA. The observations detected 15 previously undiscovered very faint galaxies.

In addition, the team estimated the number density of these objects which are nearly 10 times fainter than in previous studies at submillimeter range.
