Ceremony Held to Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Relocation of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (Formerly the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory) to Mitaka

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) celebrated the 100th anniversary of the relocation of the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory (a precursor to NAOJ) to Mitaka-mura, Kita-Tama-gun, Tokyo (now Mitaka City, Tokyo) on September 1, 1924. A ceremony was held on September 1, 2024 at the Mitaka City Public Hall to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the relocation to Mitaka.
The event began with a ceremonial address by NAOJ Director General Mamoru Doi, followed by ceremonial addresses by Kotaro Kohno, Director of the Institute of Astronomy , School of Science, the University of Tokyo, and Maki Kawai, President of the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS), followed by congratulatory messages from Takashi Kawamura, Mitaka City Mayor, Toshiaki Ito, Chairperson of the Mitaka City Assembly, and Tatsuya Ito, Member of the national House of Representatives. Afterwards, Doi presented a certificate of appreciation to Mitaka City, followed by a presentation on “100 Years of Astronomy in Japan” by Junichi Watanabe, Distinguished Professor at NAOJ, and a presentation on “Unraveling the Universe from Japan: A Journey 13.8 Billion Years into the Past and 100 Billion Years into the Future” by Hitoshi Murayama, University Professor, Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe, The University of Tokyo. The many members of the general public who applied in advance to attend the event listened with great interest and enjoyment.
