On February 3, 2023, Ambassador of the Republic of Chile to Japan, His Excellency Mr. Ricardo G. Rojas, visited NAOJ Mitaka Campus.

Ambassador Rojas received an overview of NAOJ’s mission and operations from NAOJ Director General Saku Tsuneta. After that, they held discussions with other attendees and actively exchanged opinions about NAOJ’s achievements and future plans for large-scale international joint research projects, such as the ALMA telescope array currently in operation in Chile and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) scheduled to be built on the Island of Hawai`i.

Afterwards, the Ambassador and his suite visited the Advanced Technology Center where they observed the ultra-precision machine workshop for the fabrication of astronomical instrumentation such as high-sensitivity sensors and ALMA receivers, and chatted with Chilean researchers engaged in scientific activities at NAOJ.

Finally, the Ambassador and his suite visited the 4D2U Dome Theater and experienced a beautiful four-dimensional view of the Universe created by supercomputer simulations based on recent observational data.
