Memorial Service for Prof. Koh-Ichiro Morita was Held in Santiago

On May 14 (Chilean Time), a memorial service was held at the Santiago Central Offices of the Joint ALMA Office (JAO) for Professor Koh-Ichiro Morita who passed away on May 7 (Chilean Time). It was broadcast to the ALMA Telescope site (Operations Support Facility : OSF) via video conference, and was attended by about 80 staff members including staff of JAO, the site staff from Japan, the United States and Europe.
JAO Director Thijs de Graauw moderated the ceremony, and NAOJ ALMA Site Director Tetsuo Hasegawa introduced Prof. Morita's background and achievements. After Ravinder Bhatia (JAO Project System Engineer), Koh-Ichiro Nakanishi (JAO CSV Scientist) and Nick Whyborn (JAO Array System Group Manager) sent messages to Prof. Morita, his wife talked about some of her memories. From OSF, Joaquin Collao (NAOJ Site Manager) sent a message as a friend. After the memorial service, his family talked with the staff at the hall of JAO Central Offices.

Also, on May 12 (Chilean Time), the ceremony of farewell to the body was held at a Santiago funeral home. Several dozen people including the Ambassador of Japan to Chile Hidetoku Murakami, JAO Director Thijs de Graauw and his wife, JAO Deputy Director Lewis Ball, and JAO relations, people of related local companies, and NAOJ staff members attended the ceremony.
