Subaru Telescope Okayama Branch (formerly the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory) is on the summit of Mt. Chikurinji in Okayama. The site has been the center of optical and infrared astronomy research in Japan for over 60 years. The 188-cm reflector telescope, one of the largest reflectors in Japan, is operated here in addition to the 91-cm and 50-cm reflector telescopes.
Visitors can enter the 188-cm telescope dome and view the telescope through glass windows, as well as view panels there introducing the research being conducted. They can also enjoy panoramic views of the cityscape of Asakuchi and the Seto Inland Sea.
On March 31, 2018, Okayama Astrophysical Observatory completed its mission and became the "Subaru Telescope Okayama Branch." Consequently, NAOJ discontinued the public opening of the observatory, but the Okayama Astronomical Museum took over it and continues the opening to this day.
