There are certainly many people who are taking the first steps towards a new life. NAOJ once again welcomes many new employees and students. There are also certainly many people who realize that the road they have chosen for themselves is actually a world of challenges to be overcome. But if they give up, there is no chance for success. I believe that with hope in their hearts, they will push forward with conviction.

NAOJ has started construction of TMT (the thirty meter diameter optical/infrared telescope which will be built on Mauna Kea in Hawaii). TMT is an international collaboration implemented by five countries. This year, the TMT International Observatory (TIO), the parent body responsible for the construction and operation of TMT, is being established. We also hope to begin construction on the summit of Mauna Kea. We realize the road will be difficult, but this is none other but the road we have chosen. We will push forward with hope in our hearts.
