NAOJ Solar Tower Telescope Movie
Movie・
In Tokyo, “Tokyo Heritage Week” is held annually around Culture Day (November 3). For Tokyo Heritage Week in 2016, we made a movie introducing NAOJ’s Solar Tower Telescope, a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
Observing the History and Development of Astronomy, the Solar Tower Telescope Stands in a Dense Forest
In 1930, the Solar Tower Telescope was built in NAOJ Mitaka Campus. It was built to confirm Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. It is a unique building whose entire structure is a huge telescope. In 1998, it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Almost half a century has passed since it was retired as an observing facility. The surroundings used to be an excellent place for observation, but now it is a dense forest. Usually only the exterior can be viewed. But the interior is opened to the public a few times a year. On those days, visitors can see the spectrum of the sunlight which comes from the dome and passes into the underground spectroscope room, just as it used to. We hope this movie conveys the charm of the Solar Tower Telescope.
