188-cm Reflector Telescope Dome beneath a Full Sky of Stars
Okayama Astrophysical Observatory opened in 1960 as an associated facility of the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Astronomical Observatory. At the time of the opening, the British-built 188-cm Reflector Telescope was the 7th largest in the world, and it was known as “the best telescope in the Orient.” The 20 meter diameter dome housing the 188-cm Reflector Telescope perfectly matches the image many people have of an “observatory.” As such, this shape has become a familiar symbol of the region.
