Inheriting a Passion about the Universe—the Course of Nobeyama Radio Observatory

Movie・

In 2012, Nobeyama Radio Observatory welcomed the 30th anniversary of its opening. To celebrate those 30 years, together with the publication a commemorative book, this video was produced to summarize the vital points of 30 years of progress. Interviews are mingled throughout this video as it introduces episodes from the ordeals of the founding times; to the discovery of interstellar molecules; research which provided evidence for supermassive black holes; and the progression through the ASTE telescope to ALMA.

“Let’s build the best telescope in the world!” was the slogan for building Nobeyama Radio Observatory which succeeded in raising Japanese radio astronomy to a world class level. The progression of Japanese radio astronomy is embedded in Nobeyama Radio Observatory: the construction of the Nobeyama 45 m Radio Telescope and the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the many research results from these telescopes; the approach to sub-millimeter waves through the ASTE telescope; and plans for ALMA, the largest radio telescope in history.
