The Photoelectric Meridian Circle and its observatory room located around the center of the vast Mitaka Campus were used for precise positional observations of astronomical bodies. The area around the observatory room is the most open to the sky on the entire Mitaka Campus. Having already completed its career in observation, the Photoelectric Meridian Circle today has been reborn as the Astronomical Instrument Museum within the Visitors’ Area. During the coldest time of the year, the retired observatory room looks stoically skyward into the southern night sky filled with stars.
