1. Introduction

This Guide explains how to use the Copyrighted Works on NAOJ’s website in an easy-to-understand manner. It also explains in more detail the “Terms of Use of the Website of NAOJ”. Please read this guide and usage rules carefully for secondary usage.

2. NAOJ’s Stance on Usage of NAOJ Copyrighted Works

NAOJ wants to have as many people as possible use the NAOJ Copyrighted Works. This is one of the social contributions from NAOJ. Furthermore, NAOJ feels that this is a way to contribute to the education and development of science fields including astronomy. As a secondary effect, NAOJ hopes that NAOJ's research activities become more widely known in society.

3. How to Distinguish NAOJ Copyrighted Works from Others

When the written credits mention only the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ).

When the credits mention the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) and other institutions/individuals.

This work is owned jointly with other organizations. When using it, you need to obtain permission from NAOJ, and all other institutions / people listed. Applying for permission to use is required.

Examples of credits: “NAOJ / JAXA”, “National Astronomical Observatory of Japan / Personal Names”, or “National Astronomical Observatory of Japan / Other Institutions / Personal Names”.

Make credits visible

When you want to overlay credits on images or movies, make sure that the contrast between the credits and the background is not too low, so that the credits are clearly visible.

Where to Write Credits

The credits should be listed next to the Copyrighted Work in principle. If this is difficult to do in your printed media, movie, etc., you can write it in an end note or an credits roll.

6. Usage Report

Please report usages with a “Copyrighted Material Usage Report Form” so that we can understand situation where the Copyrighted Works were used. When using NAOJ Copyrighted Works for commercial use, please report us afterwards. When using it for television broadcast and so on, please contact us by the day before the broadcast date. If you are unsure whether or not you need to submit a report, please err on the side of caution and submit the report. Please note that we do not refuse use due to the lack of usage report.

7. Request for Sending Products

Please send NAOJ one sample copy of the product for us to confirm the details of the usage. If it would be financially or technically difficult for you to send it, you don’t need to do so. Are there any higher resolution images?
In general, what is on the website is the highest resolution NAOJ has.
Why are so many of the astronomical pictures taken by the 50-cm Telescope for Public Outreach in low resolution?
The CCD camera sensor used in the 1990’s and early 2000’s had a small pixel number. Therefore, there are no higher resolution images.
There are letters on the images I wish to use. Are there any images without letters?
Please contact us and ask if we have them.
Can I write letters on the NAOJ images for explanation?
Yes, you can.
Can I edit (trimming or colors transformation) the NAOJ images?
Yes, you can.
