Use of the Contents

The following three contents (images, video, graphics, and writings) are provided on the website of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan(NAOJ).
A. Contents that only NAOJ owns the copyright in
The above refers to the contents of our website without the copyright notices of other than NAOJ.
B. Contents that NAOJ and other organization(s)/individual(s) jointly own the copyright in
These contents have the copyright notices of NAOJ and other organization(s)/individual(s).
e.g., ‘NAOJ / JAXA’, ‘NAOJ/ESO/John Smith’
C. Contents that NAOJ doesn’t own the copyright in
Some contents that the institution(s)/individual(s) other than NAOJ own the copyright in are provided on NAOJ website. These contents have the copyright notice of each copyright holder.
e.g. ‘Photo: John Smith’, ‘Credit: JAXA’, ‘Copyright: Mitaka Corporation’
2. Procedures
The procedures differ from one case to the next.
A. Contents that only NAOJ owns the copyright in
With your approval on “Terms of Use”, please fill in all the necessary fields of “Application Form” and send to us by e-mail. We will send you the automatic reply to you upon receipt of your e-mail. After reviewing your application, we will send you an e-mail whether to accept or deny yours within ten days. Use our contents only after receiving of our approval.
B. Contents that NAOJ and other organization(s)/individual(s) jointly own the copyright in
When you wish to use these contents, you are required to be granted by all organization(s)/individual(s) that own the copyright. When you need an approval of NAOJ, read “Terms of Use” with your approval, fill in all the necessary fields of “Application Form”, and send to us by e-mail. We will send you the automatic reply to you upon receipt of your e-mail. After reviewing your application, we will send you an e-mail whether to accept or deny yours within ten days. Moreover, after you are granted to use by other organizations or individuals, you can use the contents.
C. Contents that NAOJ doesn’t own the copyright in
Obtain permission directly from the copyright owner displayed on the website. However, as to the contents displayed with “Secondary Use Available”, you can use the contents through the same procedure: A. Contents that only NAOJ owns the copyright in. In that case, with your approval on “Term of Use”, please fill in all the necessary fields of “Application Form” and send to us by e-mail. We will send you the automatic reply to you upon receipt of your e-mail. After reviewing your application, we will send you an e-mail whether to accept or deny yours within ten days. Use our contents only after receiving of our approval.
Notes
- In any cases of A, B, or C, we may cancel your application and request you not to use our contents even though our approval was given. For more details, please refer to the “Notes on Use” in “Terms of Use”.
- As to the contents displayed with “Secondary Use Available” among ones classified as A: Contents that only NAOJ owns the copyright in or C: Contents that NAOJ doesn’t own the copyright in, you can use them as “Use without Permission” contents within certain purposes and a scope. For more details, please refer to the “Use without Permission” in “Terms of Use”.
- After receiving your application, it will take about ten days to get our authorization. Please submit the application well in advance.
3. Credit
When you use our content, clearly credit us by displaying one of the following next to the content.

- If other instructions or regulations are shown in any cases of A, B, or C, comply with them.
- We do not refer or introduce you to the copyright holders of each content. Please contact directly to the copyright holders.
